I have solar, and all I had to dig was the holes for the supports and the poles. I didn't even have to do that, but it was cheaper that way.
"When electricity comes from wind or solar machines, every unit of energy produced, or mile traveled, requires far more materials and land than fossil fuels" I'm guessing mine only travels 150 feet. At night, the energy has to travel maybe 100 miles, from a geothermal plant south of me.
"A wind or solar farm stretching to the horizon can be replaced by a handful of gas-fired turbines, each no bigger than a tractor-trailer." Can you graze animals, grow crops, or park cars under gas turbines?
"Democrats dream of powering society entirely with wind and solar farms combined with massive batteries" This Democrat includes hydro/ run-of-river hydro, wave, geothermal, and biogas.
I've been pointing out the logistics of a 10 year GND for a while. We have 260 million vehicles to replace. That means 26M/yr. Tesla's gigafactory can make 500,000 batteries/yr, so it means building 52 of them, and finding the raw resources. The WW2 analogy breaks down with resources. WW2 was fought with American iron, oil, and coal. WWCarbon will be fought mostly with foreign resources, in competition with the world. Right now, we can't process rare earths, and our only mine is owned by China. I suppose I should start saying, "Trump sold our rare earths to China" in response to "Hillary sold uranium to Russia".
