I'm having a chuckle here... Tier one manufactured PV's have an energy payback of less than a year now if they are installed in sunny areas. That's all the energy for mining, refining silicon, slicing it, making the glass, etc. And they can all be recycled at the end of their life. Some of mine are over forty years old and are still going strong! You can't do that with fossil fuels! Once they are burned they are gone. (Well we are left with all of the pollution!) :)
