I've been on both sides of the equation and I can tell you that as an employer it was really tough to lose key people to competitors.
Earlier I worked for a startup - 2 years old when I got there. Along with a promotion came a stock option. I can tell you that yes, it was a reward and meant future wealth, but it also tied me very strongly to the success of the company and I busted my a** even more as a result. That co. was ahead of its time (this was in the early '60s).

Of course it's a compensation issue and no doubt FASB will shove something down the throats of those fast growing companies that use the ISO as the INCENTIVE in ISO. What worked years ago doesn't apply anymore. To the specific case I believe the stock is treasury stock voted into existence by, guess who? **the shareholders!**
