A major advance in Lithium-Ion battery design has been reported. - nature.com - cleantechnica.com

Lithium dendrites forming in ill-fitting chabuduo lithium batteries manufactured in China for the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and other devices caused the batteries to short resulting in countless fires.

It was previously thought that using a solid state electrolyte was the only solution to poor manufacturing tolerances in lithium batteries.

But Tesla research partner, Jeff Dahn from Dalhousie University, reports in Nature that an anode-free lithium-metal pouch cells with a dual-salt LiDFOB/LiBF4 liquid electrolyte achieves achieves a higher number of recharge cycles and without the formation of any battery shorting lithium dendrites.

The pouch made of eliminates the need for cobalt in the anode of lithium batteries, resulting in a decline in cobalt price.

The list of very inexpensive and common metals which can be used to replace cobalt are slowly consumed with each recharge before the lithium battery is recycled.

Some Russian-affiliated fake-news outlets have mistakenly claimed Dahn's discovery ends the need for Lithium-ion batteries rather than making them more efficient and less costly.
