"Intel is going to be serving the low end of the PC market; they're not just going to let that go," McClean said. "Intel has the capacity and production facilities to have different versions" of the Pentium II.

From a capital spending perspective, Advanced Micro Devices is dwarfed by Intel as Intel spends six times that of AMD, McClean said. This year, Intel will spend $5.3 billion on capital spending, up from $4.5 billion in 1997.

AMD, in comparison, reported 1997 revenues of $613.2 million and capital spending of $650 million for the year -- nowhere near the level of Intel. As a result, McClean said AMD will remain a "niche player" in the processor market, but not really competing against Intel.
