<The problem I have with this is that how do you know when the customer has been harmed in the way of lack of innovation?>

This is a highly subjective question and I can easily argue it the other way. Unix has stagnated for several years with all of the competition it had. Now that MSFt is consolidating the market, new features, feature consolidation and innovation abound. Before you ask where or how, go to MSFT's site and look at their Internet technology, currnetly the best IMAO.

The PC productivity application market was highly competitive just a few years ago, with new innovations in ease of use popping up quite sporadically (Ashton-Tate, Lotus, Wordperfect upgrades were the equivalent of the new Office service packs). Compare that to the rate of innovation of Office suites (not to mention the difference in price) now that MSFT has consolidated the industry.

I could go on.
