China has a huge water problem. They are plagued by drought in some areas, and in
others, sloppy mining practices have contaminated the water table. They don't have
enough water to grow sufficient crops, so they've gotten very aggressive about setting
up overseas food sources: They bought the biggest hog operation in the U.S., Smithfield
Foods, they're buying up large tracts of land in Africa, growing alfalfa and drawing water
from an aquifer in Arizona, and they have indeed turned to Brazil for soybeans and other
food. Since Brazil is now the biggest producer of animal protein in the world, a logical partner.
They have a grand plan to build a railroad across Brazil and Peru to sidestep shipments on
the Panama Canal.
Climate change and trade wars have consequences. Burning the Amazon makes it worse.
Not fun watching the climate feedback loop accelerate.
