MSFT still has an appeal pending with a direct effect on NOVL

MSFT is contending that they should have control over what functionality gets integrated into their operating system. They are already complaining that NOVL has modified one of the "key" security components of their operating system.

The implications for NOVL are really quite striking. IF MSFT wins on this point of bering able to integrate previously external functionality into its OS then NOVL may be faced with being locked out of any products which inter-operate with NT. MSFT will merely contend that it has the right to control its operating system and modifications thereto. By the time NOVL recognizes what has happened to it and complains to the DOJ, the horse will have gotten out of the barn.

I'm sorry that NOVL has such a passive and technically illiterate BOD because this could kill the company. MSFT could give people a stark choice---go with an approved NT or a malfunctioning (made to malfunction by NT OS changes) Netware and who will Novell complain to at that point?

MSFT is clearly moving toward a proprietary OS. If they get there with the Courts permission and the DOJ's cave in then NOVL is finished in the NOS business.

I'll bet none of this is even on the BOD's radar screen. Talk about an inflection point.
