Carol, I think you've touched on something important about this... which is your statement "Doesn't being in office have a moral, ethical responsibility that inherently come with the job? If he cannot make ethical choices in his personal life, doesn't it stand to reason, that there will be a spillover into his political life?"
President of a superpower country, counted on to both champion causes and lead on the home front.. but in the founding documents of this country, the President is the chief executive officer whose principal charge is to defend the people in an unpredictable, agressive world.
Focusing on that responsibility, know that its not a fairplay by the rules world..... there is every kind of imaginable devious, immoral, unfair, deceptive, cut your throat and smile potential enemy to the United States. In the country you've got people in state and in the defense dept, cias, secret this and that's, spooks at every corner trying for all they're worth get around the system of checks and balances to do their mission... we've certainly seen enough of that to know its real and its every day.
What kind of person do you hire to do this job? It would seem to me an improbable person who could both understand these challenges, out think or plan these challenges, without having in them some understanding of how to play at the margins. On the one hand we say, sure.. be a tough guy, stand up to terrorists, outmaneuver the enemies of our country.. but be an upright boyscout when your in the white house. A person with these dual qualities in my opinion dosen't exist...
The office of president is a tough ass place, thugs are knocking at your door every day, and they want to sucker punch your lights out. We've romanticized the office with our own idealizations.. but I'd prefer to have someone who is crafty, clever, mean spirited, whatever is needed when the time comes.
I have a real problem balancing the variety of traits we expect of anyone occupying the office while at the same time judging their personal life when it doesn't affect their job, or perhaps even enhances it... |
