Theft is not normal trade behavior. If you're an outsider like the Soviet Union or Maoist China people tolerate it because you're an isolated-nothing and not a competitor.

China's leadership either finds a way to accept this or not. Entirely their choice.

China's alternative is to trade exclusively with nations which have nothing to steal. And realistically this option probably best fits their current culture.

It probably wasn't realistic to expect such a significant cultural change in such a short period of time.

Trump has temporarily confused the dialog with nonsense about tariffs, but that's temporary. Theft is an all or nothing equation.
