I kept it up for 2 years. But as I said, it was not a chaotic disaster situation. You could go to a hospital, but it was 2 hrs away, not very good, and more than you could afford. So for practical reasons, you had no hospital.

Most people think that the loss of high technology is a very big deal. But it isn't. It is the chaos and lack of law and order that creates a disaster. Otherwise, your grandchildren can live like your grandparents did without feeling like like the end of the world is here.

[Edit] We also didn't have access to clean water, but we did have poor but acceptable plumbing and sewage system. In practical terms, this meant boiling water for drinking, and using buckets of cold and hot water to wash yourself...oh, and before I forget, I did learn how to make cheese during that time. It is a staple of my diet and I had to have it ;)
