Gather dried up bushes/shrubs and stuff them in fishing nets, meshes, or make do wrappings. Soak them in water and stuff the windows with them. It should be light enough to allow breezes to go through, but dense enough to retain the water for a few hours. The evaporation will cool the air passing through it well enough to provide for comfortable nap and your character will be a hero to the rest of his people :) If your character is an engineer, he should poke a few holes in a hose and let it leak over the screen to provide continuous moisture.

If they are going to be there for years, then they should make a windcatcher.
