Study Links Willingness To Persecute Immigrants To Trump Support

Study found that people who strongly support Trump are more willing to commit violence against immigrants.

According to The New Scientist, hate crimes are on the rise, and many have believed this is linked to Trump’s inflammatory speech regarding immigration. Until there, there has been no quantifiable evidence that hate crimes and the president’s language was linked.

A new study among white Americans has found that people who strongly identify with Trump’s ideals are more likely and willing to commit a hate crime. The survey presented groups with a variety of scenarios, asking them how much they identify with the president and then asking questions about behaviors they were willing to engage in.

Bill Swan at the University of Texas at Austin stated, “The authors have provided compelling evidence of what many have suspected for some time: for Trump supporters, antipathy toward some of the favourite targets of his antipathy – immigrants, Muslims and Iranians – is deeply personal. That is, those whose personal selves were deeply aligned or ‘fused’ with Trump felt emboldened to assault members of groups that Trump has vilified.”

Trump’s language is undeniably harmful, but now there is explicit evidence.
