Protein C, is part of the fibrinolytic systems to balance clot formation
in the blood. There are diseases of protein C deficiency and the sufferers
are prone to form thrombi anywhere in the body (decrease ability to
decrease fibrin formation). Treatment: Plasma transfusion, and when
the patient is stable then Coumadin (warfarin). It is of hepatic origin,
and transient deficiencies can occur with liver diseases. It is also altered
during septic shock, but more complex issue. (caveat: this is from memory).

It tends to increase during infections, there were many attempts
to use it as a diagnostic marker of infections'but failed to become a
significant test due to poor ability to screen for infections,
not better than a regular white cell count, neither better when used
in combination with white cells count.

Hepatectomy trials and BPI, I do not know their destiny.
