This was the very topic of conversation last time I got together with my lawyer friends, and the consensus was that the most surprising thing is that it is way easier than any of us thought to just straight up ignore the Constitution. I don’t think it would be possible for Democrats, if only because of the “empty space” advantage, wherein senators from relatively unpopulated states get the exact same voting power as senators from densely populated states. So as long as one party makes a concentrated effort to convince a few thousand Montanans or Alaskans to vote their way, they can take over the Senate, and as the only body with the authority to impeach elected officials, they get carte Blanche to do whatever the hell they want.

Let me emphasize that this has nothing to do with political affiliation or belief. It’s a massive gap in the Constitution that nobody has ever had the wherewithal to do before, at least not this brazenly. But now that we all know it can be done, more will follow.
