Again, your Hitler / Trump election comparison isn’t quite factual in percentage terms nor circumstances as Hitler was already de facto in power before the 1933 election.

Leaving all these misconceptions aside, back to your question. I can only offer one theory: The 2016 vote wasn’t for Trump. It was a classic protest vote as in “enough of the endless politicking” on both sides of the isle.

Trump’s “checkered” past was no secret in 2016 and yet he won probably against his personal expectations. Trump can be blamed for a lot things but he didn’t elect / appoint himself. The American people did and I am rather afraid they may just do it one more time as I (so far) don't see a viable personality opposing him.
