I followed up on Linda's post concerning SAIC and the DoD Global Command and Control System agreement. I spoke with Dick Quintana (703 827-4813) of SAIC, today and asked him a few questions. He said that the agreement had not been implemented yet. The GCCS was in the midst of a transition between and an old and new system, and should have been completed about a month ago. What SAIC is trying to convince GCCS of is that they would be better off with an analog system for their campus environment, than a digital one. GCCS has not made a decision yet, and Dick said that their is no guarrantee that SYSTEMS will get the contract. GCCS has no funding problem as it is security and nationial interest concerns. Dick said that SYSTEMS strengh lies in its analog distribution in the campus environment serving multiple points. And that cost was the main factor. SYSTEMS competion is geared to reducing the cost of digital distribution, but analog is far less expensive. He said that it will only take a demand for SYSTEMS gear for the Company to really take off. He reaffirmed SAICs participation in the installation at St. Barnabus Hospital, and the problems of signal interference. He said the solution of shielded wired has been proposed, but doesn't know if the fix has been implemented. He expects other units to be installed in Barnabus' connections. SAIC has big expectations with contracts with the Intelligence Community. He had very positive feelings about it all 6 months ago, but now not sure when it will come to fruition. The Intelligence Community had concerns for security, with the system, (which has been addressed), and overloading of their LAN (which has been addressed). So he really doesn't know why the hold up. Again, funds are not a problem. Concerning a SEXI department, Dick said that they had a lab of about 20x40 feet dedicated to integration of SYSTEMS product. They have a group of about half a dozen people who spend about 50% of their time supporting SYSTEMS development. I asked Dick about their subsidiary Tele-Images and SYSTEMS telemedicine. He said that he couldn't remember the gentleman's name to question, but that I should call back later today...Ron
