Yes, the Borg model has merits. But I think that ultimately it will be entirely machines. We had this debate last night, at what point is a human not a human? Clearly we accept that replacing arms, legs, heart, etc doesn't make a person less human. There are now brain prosthetics. In time, they'll mature and progress. Perhaps the experimental brain /neural prosthetics that is developed to help Parkinson patients control their arms becomes the addition to give a person super reflexes. Perhaps the addictions that read mind and let an animal (or person) control a machine simply become gears to fly airplanes. It's not inconceivable that if the electronics can read mind, they could be used to enhance upload of info and skills. So at what point will we say that an existence that started out as a human is no longer human? Welcome to the Borg nursery!
