Report: Kansas winter wheat harvest way behind normal Monday, June 24, 2019 washingtontimes.com The wet fall of 2018 hindered planting winter wheat, a relatively prominent crop in the state, said Reid Christopherson, executive director of the South Dakota Wheat Commission. Wi Winter wheat is planted in the fall, goes dormant during winter and then begins growing again in the spring. That was followed by unusually wet conditions in the spring of this year, hampering and delaying spring wheat planting, he said. Exceptionally wet weather this fall — some areas in South Dakota have received 10 inches or more of precipitation — further snarls what was already a late harvest season, he said. “It’s been one thing after another with no break in the clouds,” Christopherson said.
September 2 2019 10:16 AM The Teagasc provisional cereal harvest estimate for 2019 is a production of approximately 2.1 million tonnes of cereals. This is over 8.5% below the five year average of 2.3 million tonnes. However, it says the cereal area has stabilised in 2019 following recent declines. Harvesting progress has been disrupted by recent rain with the majority of spring barley and winter wheat reaming to be harvested. Yield and quality for all cereals have been good so far. Malting barley yields to date are above average, but low proteins are causing difficulties for farmers fulfilling malting contract obligations. Teagasc said while the 2019 harvest is still in progress planning for the 2019/20 season is also underway. "Lessons from recent seasons are that having a spread of crops and a spread of varieties within those crops is important to reduce risk," it said.
Meanwhile, potato blight has been observed in many potato crops, and growers have been advised to keep intervals tight and continue with their blight programmes through desiccation of the crops

2019 Hard Red Winter Wheat Harvest Finally Ends 9/23/2019 Tim Luken, manager at Oahe Grain in Onida, South Dakota, told me the HRW harvest there started July 23, about two weeks later than normal, and ended about one month later due to weekly rain events. "This was a war with Mother Nature, but overall, our crop wasn't the end of the world," Luken said. "Yes, almost all the bushels had some sort of tombstone or scab damage, and we did lose test weight due to rains. Some wheat was 61 pounds at the start, and by the time the same field was done, test weight was down to 56 pounds.
"As for the higher-damage crop, we told the producer to take it home and take samples out of each load to come up with a composite sample of the field or bin. dtnpf.com
