CPQ is a logical choice to buy Gateway, so is IBM maybe...or a large Japanese company. Still I don't know who would buy them.
If Compaq or IBM did, the important thing is that Gateway wouldn't be an exclusive Intel Inside brand anymore and AMD or Cyrix would be able to sell them some chips.
