I used to tell my mom that about her scant knowledge of her vehicle - she'd go off main roads in her camper in all seasons and I said she really couldn't afford to be THAT ignorant of how her car worked and do that activity alone. She knew more about her collie than her lightweight Toyota conversion. Really simple things - how to relight the pilot on the fridge, where shutoffs were, how to operate a fire extinguisher (and the importance of having one) and other stuff like changing tires or figuring out whether to go down a road or not.

This can determine whether you live or die and your knowledge of the details of your dog's breeding won't. Fortunately - she was lucky - so my concerns were not borne out ... not out of impossibility but a lifetime's worth of dumb luck.
