"...we are moving from the perception that this is late cycle to end of cycle and, when that happens, defensive stocks outperform secular growth stocks. Indeed, that is precisely what has been happening since July, first during the growth scare in August and then further during the momentum reversal in early September. During the most recent growth scares in late 2015/early 2016 and then 4Q18, the defensive cohort outperformed secular growth by 25%. So far the outperformance has been about 12% or about half of what we expect before this is over. A simpler and lower beta way to express this same idea is to be short the Nasdaq against a long in the S&P 500."
