10/3/96 Sinagpore Police Arrest 8 On Intel Chip-Altering Charges

SINGAPORE (AP)--Eight people have been arrested on charges they altered Intel Corp. (INTC) computer chips to make them appear to be more powerful models, Singapore broadcasting reported.
Police said it was the first such case uncovered in Singapore.

They said that using a grinding machine and laser-etching equipment, the counterfeiters changed labels on 400 chips to make them appear to be Intel's more expensive Pentium microprocessors.
The counterfeiters made about $100 profit on each altered chip, the report said. Police seized chips worth about $115,000.

If convicted of forgery, the suspects could face up to seven years in prison.
