Another trick, shown over and over is pictures or video of industrial smoke stacks, billowing out what looks like smoke, but it's actually water vapor, - steam. On a cold day it looks terrible. One way to tell it's harmless steam is that it dissipates and disappears not long after leaving the chimney, without the lingering tell tale black residue that real polluting smoke emits.

The smoke you see may just be water vapor.
