The Fed lasted longer than Communism, and the Bank of England is 80 years older than USA. The work of Fed Committee is largely a formality because they approve what the market has already set. The Fed, the treasury are institutions that can issue paper money. I doubt things are going back to gold, too inconvenient for the banks.
