It's the old "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" thing. We had a common interest until there wasn't one The Kurds want their own country. To do that, they want territory from Turkey, Syria and Iraq. So they have been fighting for that for years.

We wanted a natural gas pipeline built from the Persian gulf countries like Saudi Arabia through Syria and then Turkey to compete with the Russians for the European market. Assad, who has a relationship that goes back decades with the Russians said no, so we armed the Kurds and ISIS and turned them loose on him. Suddenly Assad was a "butcher" and a terrible human being according to our press. Until the Russians stepped in it almost worked. But they turned the tide against ISIS and the rest of the rebels which were armed by the Saudis.

That is the story in a nutshell. Everything else you read is propaganda. I have been following this story for many years.

I pass no judgement on any of this. But that is just the way it is. Our Foreign policy is not a clean situation. There are only winners and losers and morality & ethics are thrown out the door.
