When we had our body shop (70's and early 80s) we use to strip GM autos with paint remover, not trucks, they were enamel, just needed to sand them, but cars were lacquer and it cracked. So paint stripper was used and it was a messy job, I hated that job, as we didn't have the safety equipment they do now. I don't miss it one bit.

Other vehicles, Ford, Chrysler were enamel and all they needed was sanding. It was rare that we ever striped one of those. The reason they strip the plane, I would guess would be weight.
