I agree with some of what you said. I do think that people who are more educated tend to bring an enlightened more humane view to many issues. However, you are ignoring all of history if you think that the US is on the right path right now. We are so clearly in decline in so many ways. The lack of civility in political discourse and the inability to put country above internecine strife between parties are just two examples of why we can't get anything done for the betterment of this country. The maturity curve of countries is well documented and we are following that maturity curve to a tee. Our debt ridden economy is a shambles and doesn't serve the whole population well and that is because of the mess the Fed has enabled and Congress has allowed. Corruption is rampant. You will say it's just on the Republican side, but we have evidence of corruption on both sides of the aisle. Congress no longer serves the American people, but rather, they spend all their time engaging in Circus-like activities designed to enrage and divide the people, without actually doing anything to make things better. Enlightened people understand that they are simply engaging in distraction tactics, since they are incapable of helping the American people. When poor people get elected to Congress and strike it rich, enlightened and educated people understand that there is only one way that is possible on Congressional salaries....corruption. Let's just watch that young, poor bartender from the Queens over the next 5 years. If she suddenly becomes a millionaire, I think we can all be certain it won't be from her Congressional earnings. Congress doesn't serve the American people. It serves itself and gives us the soporific diversion of reality TV.

So if this is enlightenment, then we have a serious problem.
