Majority of Americans oppose helping Asia -poll

"The poll, the first to comprehensively assess American attitudes to the crisis, found that 52.2 percent disagreed with the Clinton administration's controversial request to get Congress to approve some $19 billion of extra money for the International Monetary Fund."

Just 15.8 percent of those questioned believed helping Indonesia, where the currency has halved in value in just over a week, was either important or very important to U.S. interests.

Support could only be rallied for countries familiar to the American people, with 41.0 percent supporting help for Japan, 29.3 percent supporting South Korea and 29.6 percent for China.
