Tesla Model S 85kw Battery Replacement Cost

Submitted by 88MPG on June 28, 2014

I've asked the Tesla rep several times regarding the replacement cost of a Model S battery . . . he keeps saying $12,000 . . . which IMHO is more than reasonable. However, I've noticed on various other posts that the battery cost was more like 1/2 the cost the the car. I'm starting to wonder if the $12,000 that he quoted me was future replacement expected cost (i.e.. in 10 years after construction/production of the Gigawatt Factory). I just want to know that if I damage my battery today, what it would cost to replace it. Thanks all . . .

Closer to 45,000

If you have an 85 there's a no-fault warranty on it for 8 years, barring accident or intentional misuse.

Barring accident or intentional misuse, there is no reason to concern yourself with this issue. In three years because of the new battery plant the price of batteries will be so much slower it's hard to imagine. Yes the full price of the battery pack now is $45,000. There are so many reasons why it costs that much at this time. When the battery start out made specifically for the car, they could be as little as half the price. Your current pack always has a trade-in value. There is a lot of recyclable materials there. I Have learned a lot about lithium batteries. I feel confident the pack last will last possibly 100,000 to 150,000 miles and still be useful after that.

While no one can predict the future, Tesla will bring the price of the battery pack way down. They would not be building a fine billion-dollar battery plant if they didn't have that in mind!

$45,000 works out to about $480 per kWh on the 85 battery. Too high, price is likely $300 per kWh or $25,500.
