"What I learned in my long life Sam, is that humanity is a direct outcome of education." Then the U.S. is completely screwed. State governments are passing laws to make home schooling exemptions easier to obtain. In some cases the kids don't have to be taught anything. At the same time many states are continuing to reduce support of public colleges and universities making it more and more difficult for students from poor and even middle class families to get an education. Many universities are now creating very expensive student housing so that they can attract more students from wealthier families reducing the need to provide financial aid to poorer students because there will be fewer of them. The ignorant and the stupid are now running the country. I was lucky to have been born poor in a wealthy town and I got a very good basic education. Experiences such as mine are becoming much more rare. Republicans are trying to reintroduce a feudal society, where the rich will get a first class education to better enable them to suppress everyone else.
