I don't see what you are referring to. The upper graph appears to be Fed Assets and they are declining steadily through Dec '18, they only start increasing just recently as one would expect.

If instead you are referring to the lower graph which does show a pop in late Sept or early Oct of '18, I don't know what that graph is, it lacks labels.

I'm curious about the rise in the Fed balance sheet which began before the Dec. mini-crash.

As far as an actual economist on SI, I don't know of any. Calculatedrisk used to post on SI back during the housing boom and bust. He runs calculatedriskblog.com
