once everyone who lived through WWII is dead, it wouldn't be a shocker to see them repeat their follies I would argue that the only other period that came close to equaling the devastation of the Long War (counting WWI and WWII as one lethal continuing conflict, which at least some historians do) was the Thirty Years War (from about 1618-1648), which mercifully ended with the Treaty of Wesphalia, a treaty which, like the EU, was intended to make that devastation impossible again. During the Thirty Years War, it has been estimated that something like 75% of the villages of Central Europe were destroyed, completely depopulated either by murder or people just running away from the violence. Westphalia worked for a few decades until the memories grew dim and then they started fighting again in the Age of Enlightenment 18th Century. Of course, that is taking a very Eurocentric view of things. The Russians, the Chinese, and various other places have had similar outbreaks of devastating violence over the past few centuries.
