He grew up in Montreal and earned his BA from McGill and his PhD from Harvard. Currently Johnstone Professor of Psychology at Harvard, he has also taught at Stanford and MIT.

Koan, that is absurd. The first half of the 20th century was the bloodiest half century in recorded history. Humans didn't suddenly become "kind" after that bloodbath. Europeans desperately wanted to try to avoid a recurrence of it. So they set up the EU in order create interconnections between the countries so that everyone would have a vested interest in not invading anyone else. It has nothing to do with "kindness", it has everything to do with self interest and economics.
