The first half of the 20th century was the bloodiest half century in recorded history. Humans didn't suddenly become "kind" after that bloodbath. Europeans desperately wanted to try to avoid a recurrence of it. So they set up the EU in order create interconnections between the countries so that everyone would have a vested interest in not invading anyone else. It has nothing to do with "kindness", it has everything to do with self interest and economics.
