Kohlrabi may be weird looking but it is very useful; not only is it perfect for flavouring soups but great in salads, and you can even eat it like an apple once you have peeled it.

One other advantage of kohlrabi in soup is that it freezes well. You may have noticed that I do not use potatoes in my soups; this is because I freeze most of what I make for later eating, and potatoes, unlike the rest of the ingredients, go weird when they are frozen.

Now I am contemplating a mystery. As all gardeners in areas with acidic soil should, I save my eggshells from the kitchen and when I have enough I crush them and shake them out across my beds. The mystery is where they all go. Sometimes they disappear in a day, sometimes it takes two days, but not a trace remains.

What is the mechanism by which they are absorbed into the soil. Do they dissolve? Get hauled under by wee beasties? Eaten by wee beasties?
