Alex,
(And I don't mean any disrespect, although you might take it as such)
"I don't need to know the ins and outs of the customer systems because I trade at a firm"
1. First off, Philip is saying his system is newer and better than most. Given the incredible speed at which technology changes, it very likely could be. I run our firm and determine which technologies are employed and where, and can tell you the turnover rate on technologies is sometimes as low as 3 or 4 months. So even though you trade at a firm and have some experience with their technology, wouldn't you like to know what else is out there?
I am not sure what you mean by direct connection, perhaps you mean a system where you are sitting at the SOES shop, etc. Well, what if technology was at such a point that there was NO difference between the two? What if technology was at a point whereby the services you could get at home were BETTER than at your direct connection? Cheaper? Remember, I don't offer any of these services. I am from the camp that still thinks they all are much slower than calling me at the trading desk on the phone and getting a report or cancel or nothing done is a three or four seconds. But I would love to know whats out there.
2. If you do know the ins and outs, that doesnt mean that most on here do, and this thread is so that everyone (myself included) can ask and learn about things they desire to learn about, when they want. Personally, I would like to know how a competitor routes orders to various exchanges (technically) so that he can get "better" executions. For all the questions I answer, am I not allowed to have mine answered?
3. MANY, MANY posts on this thread are about trading systems, quote services, etc. Infact, I would say atleast 20 or 30% are oriented toward quote vendors, internet trading sites, etc. Irby and a few others are the gurus in this area. To them, its very very important. Personally, to me, its not that important because I would never employ such a technology for MYSELF. But I do get clients that ask for such services and its important I know what works. I demo systems and have at times worked with Irby checking out some stuff that comes online. So, I don't read every single post about how SPcomstock has their t/s/q vs. PCquotes, etc., but when I don't wantto read it, I hit the <NEXT> button, or I skip over 5 or 6 postings.
What I'm saying is, don't get frustrated that this threadis perfectly tailored towhat you want and only what youwant. Its a great resource and you shouldnt get upset withit. If there are things out there that waste your time <NEXT> right over them.
Also, check out the trading desk thread, Subject 15612. We don't talk quote systems at all. Mainly trading strategies, execution systems of choice, etc.
