I pride myself on not using any machines in my garden.

Part of my workout regime in summer is to chop up the pile of mouldering leaves with a hoe and turn them over repeatedly, with the added bonus of not annoying the neighbours with fumes or noise.

I was part of a coalition that tried to get gasoline-powered leaf blowers banned in Vancouver, but unfortunately we could only persuade them to institute the ban in the West End, which is one of the most densely populated naighbourhoods in North America. During the research as part of our effort I dug out a study that found that in the summer up to 20% of the pollution in the Greaer Vancouver airshed came from gardening machines. Those two stroke engines are truly awful; most landscapers would produce way fewer GHGs if they just drove their trucks around all day instead of breaking out the machines.
