As with many things it all boils down to an opinion. Some are better than others.

I've found over time that Value Line's Appreciation Potential correlates reasonably well with market movements. If anything it's been conservative and cautious. So, as a method of reducing acceptance of herd mentality it's been pretty good. I don't think I understand how Warren Buffett got involved in the topic, but I think he's done reasonably well being a contrarian. His motto and mine are quite similar.
Mine's "Buy from the Scared, Sell to the Greedy."
