That doesn't surprise me one bit. 60Hz near transmission lines is pretty nasty too. That's an example where there's no modulation, but it's still harmful. With microwaves, it's more the modulation than the carrier, and the more complex it gets with higher bandwidths, the worse it gets, especially for children's developing nervous systems.
