Thank you. From the article:
some vets are already advising against "grain free" foods...Gelzer doesn’t know exactly how the grain-free pet food trend started, but suspects it had to do with consumer demand for what seemed like a healthier alternative....Generally when dogs develop a food allergy, it’s to a protein, Gelzer said. So, veterinarians will often switch to a food with a different protein source to treat the problem.
One of the big problems with DCM is that dogs don’t show symptoms of the disease — lethargy, exercise intolerance, shortness of breath — until they’re very sick, Gelzer said.
I've never liked grain-free food. I've believed them to be unnatural. Most people have deep misconceptions about dogs and their natural food. I have a neighbor who puts his dog on "raw diet". Meaning only veins, bones, organs, etc. That is a very expensive diet. It's also very unhealthy and unnatural for dogs. Dogs are omnivores (same as humans) and in nature eat mostly fruits and vegetables with some meat from hunts. They also get all kids of diseases in nature and don't live long. So "natural" doesn't mean we can't improve on it. |
