I often wonder if these allergy problems are a product of our own doing as in not allowing exposure in early days. A child eating dirt / sand / being outside a lot and not living in a “filtered” home environment has a chance to build up its immune system. Much the same imho applies to animals.

I have never discouraged my dogs from drinking from rain water puddles, lakes or streams or eat dirt. I trust their instinct. They know what is good for them and what is not.
