Agree that evolution can proceed in fits and starts... that a single event can provide the screen that sorts in a selection that alters the population... If a major asteroid hits the planet tomorrow... people who live in caves will again be the dominant humans. The filters that matter in the short term... are the ones that sift through the population with a scythe to influence the genetics with big impact in the numbers... If within a generation you decapitate everyone over six feet tall... suddenly the population will trend shorter... because all of the women who survive and have kids will be those who share some combination of genetics dictating for the shorter traits... and most of those with the taller traits will get quite suddenly sorted out. But, show me how cell phone use relates to anything that matters in who has more kids ? Social media use more likely to lead to being sorted out of the population than sorted in with a big bias factor ? ZPG and immigration... isn't advantaging people who are too busy working and don't take the time off to have kids... so, they're not winning in terms of evolution... as ZPG isn't advancing the genetics of people who opt not to have kids... rather than the genetics of people who instead ignore the ZPG mantra ? Culture... seen imposing an excess in adherence to dictates that operate against self interest in evolutionary terms... seems it might be a tool that enables cultural suicide of populations in genetic terms... If you're so busy working, chasing the $$$ and living large, so that you never bother to have kids... you've sorted yourself out of the relevant pool of genetics in the population that survives your choices... The fact a single body is altered in its form by a response to some physical imposition... is evolutionarily irrelevant. The bone spur in the neck... not reasonably considered relevant as an element in selection... that's not evolution... its just a deformity caused by an specific impact... Similarly... give everyone a tattoo... and that doesn't suddenly mean tattoos are going to be transmitted to the next generation ?
