Vitamin D is the trickiest of all vitamins. Aside from the complexities involved with various sources and fat solubility, individual needs and tolerances vary *greatly*.

One of the earliest medical case studies that I read demonstrated this vividly. Long story short, a black woman was admited to a Chicago hospital with abdominal pain and vomiting. A day later, her daughter was brought in with even more sever symptoms. A day later their dog died. At this point CDC was called in and went to their apartment to investigate the issue.

CDC found that somehow she had gotten her hands on industrial milk fortifier and was adding it to the family milk. They estimated that they had each been taking in 2 million IU of D everyday. So now you think yes, this is very extreme and of course there would be toxicity. But the kicker was that her husband and her son had also been eating the same amounts and neither showed any symptoms.

People vary a lot and doctors really don't know how to deal with an individual. This is the rarely acknowledged dark secret of medical industry.

BTW, you are right about the need. I suspect taking vitamin D has done wonders for my knee. I have a lot less pain than used to.
