Well grocery store actually works OK but not as reliable.. but go for the loose bigger stuff... Not the bleached uber cheap packaged stuff typically from China.. (yes not ALL things Chinese are good :) .. The big loose stuff will sprout ... It happens in your pantry :)

Also I note each year down here places like HD sell garlic in the spring for planting.. probably a softneck type.. so you can plant in spring.. I would buy early and stick them in the fridge first though for a few weeks to vernalise them properly (fancy word for normal cold dormant period) ... I am going to try a couple of rows of Spring garlic myself this year...

This is where I normally order from richters.com They ship stateside... You can call to see if they can ship fast enough, what they have left etc..
