Choosing RDS.B vs BP ...................................................................................................................................

Both are great companies and the choice for me to go with RDS wasn't an easy one.

One thing I noticed working on BP projects is that they tend to "cut corners" a lot which can save a lot of money and then there are times when is goes horribly wrong (i.e. Deep Water Horizon). They do roll the dice on occasion. As long as they are "lucky" it pays off big and when they are "unlucky" .... well not so good. Just my observation but I don't work much for BP in the last few years but I suspect that the corporate culture hasn't changed much since the days of former CEO John Browne. As I tell my colleagues ... I'd rather be lucky than be good.

Still, I like both companies from an investors POV. Both are good and pay good dividends. And when I went with RDS it was just a squeaker over BP and I still may yet add BP to my portfolio. I have relatives that invested in BP for income and I think that's a good choice. Oddly enough I haven't invested in XOM or CVX for a few years and they have fairly good dividends too. The only US major I bought is OXY which is more spec than the others but most my energy plays are mid-tier operators and a few Trusts and MLPs, as well as a few pipelines, terminals, refiners, etc.
