10:15 GST Awarded Franchise in Salt Lake City

VANCOUVER, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 3, 1996--GST Telecommunications
(AMEX:GST) GST Lightwave (UT), Inc., part of the GST Telecommunications, Inc.
(AMEX:GST) family of companies, has been awarded a 15-year franchise by the
City Council of Salt Lake City for the purpose of providing telecommunications
services in Salt Lake City.
GST plans to construct a 100-mile all-digital, fiber optic network in Salt
Lake City and throughout Utah. The network architecture includes expansion
south to Provo and Orem as well as to Ogden in northern Utah. Upon
completion, the network will have the ability to provide services to over 90
percent of the population in the state of Utah.
GST's network will provide Salt Lake City businesses with a cost- effective
alternative to access their long distance carriers. GST, a full service
telecommunications provider, offers integrated voice, data, video, and
Internet services.
