California Sen. Kamala Harris is dropping out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, an aide said, after a stunning decline from her position early on as a top contender who drew 20,000 people to her campaign launch.
Ms. Harris informed staff Tuesday that she would exit the race and is expected to release a video announcing her plans. The decision came after the Democrat had spent the past few weeks focusing her campaign on Iowa, which holds the first nominating contest.
In an email to supporters that was also posted online, Ms. Harris said she “simply doesn’t have the financial resources we need to continue.”
“I’m not a billionaire,” she said in the email. “I can’t fund my own campaign. And as the campaign has gone on, it’s become harder and harder to raise the money we need to compete. In good faith, I can’t tell you, my supporters and volunteers, that I have a path forward if I don’t believe I do.”
Ms. Harris also canceled a major fundraiser in New York City Tuesday. Her campaign burned through millions of dollars more than it raised during the three-month period that ended Sept. 30, her Federal Election Commission reports showed, and she had diverted resources to Iowa after announcing layoffs and closing offices in New Hampshire.
