Hi Mike; A little Box maker CTX , is putting the pressure on prices ..don't even know if it trades ..wouldn't buy it right now if it did. They are selling so cheap I can't see anything but a loss leader..or dumping. Korea is stamped on just about every thing inside. I mean selling cheap..even under the packard bells, but it's a damm good box, much better than the packard bells (NEC). If This keeps up CPQ , DELL, and even HP will lose money trying to compeat with sub $1000.. They better sell corperations or they are about it get in troble, it may take time to come home..but the Sub $1000 is going to kick butt..just like the sub compacts did to the auto biz. This one I'm typing on would blow your mind, 200mz cyrix 686, 512 internal cache, 2.2gig HD, 33.6 modem, 24speed cd, 14 svga monitor included in the price ??? $599 ! I tossed in $150 more and and jacked up the EDO memory to 64megs..( gets out of most of the win95 HD w/r to 386swp ) which is "sick" and the biggest drag on most sets. Yep $599..monitor included, look out American Box makers. Jim P.S. bump up your memory to 64meg no matter how they say you don't need it, you do ! then get a small program named VRAMDIR, install it, $10 you will "double your real speed." VRAMDIR tricks win95 , and maps to the RAM instead of that insidious HD cache. After I boot and load my HD light don't do all that blinkity blink..blinking.:-) Most people don't know it but Win95 is a memory hog, and itschickenshit about running out of memory so it sets up virtual mem on your hard drive, and tries its dammest to reserve 50% of what ram you do have..like a fund manager scared to get invested staying 50% cash, cash it mostly never uses, but wants to have handy so you don't get out of memory message ..even with 64meg it won't use half of it if you don't trick it. Now when it goes to cache to the HD, vdirram intercepts , maps it to ram, and I save the IO, and disk w/r time. |
