I think historically the reverse is true. Historically, the Democratic party was the party of slavery and white supremacy. Even today, the party still honors racist leaders like Andrew Jackson and Woodrow Wilson. It was also Democratic Presidents like Jackson and FDR, who exercised the most unchecked executive power. The Republican party, otoh, was founded as an anti-slavery party and was the party of civil rights. The 13th through 15th amendments (ending slavery and extending equal rights and the right to vote) were passed on party line votes with Republicans supporting them and Democrats opposing. This generally remained true as later civil rights bills were attempted to be passed: en.wikipedia.org constitutioncenter.org politifact.com The GOP passed the Homestead Act and land grants for education and railroad and other infrastructure development, the first "progressive" movements in America. Granted, political stances have changed over time, beginning with Goldwater's anti-civil rights vote and finally, with Trump, a true white supremacist who idealizes the founder of the Democratic party, Andrew Jackson.

But it's also true that today the Republican party has traded sides and become a party with a very public racist wing. Just consider the racist attacks here on SI on the Obama family depicting them as apes (fubho was primary poster of this crap). Look at Nikki Haley who recently defended the Confederate flag as a noble symbol. She obviously feels she has to curry favor with the KKK/Nazi side of the modern GOP.

Just as I urged Democrats to be honest about their racist roots, today's Republicans should be honest about their racist present.
