Just when you thought it was winter… By Tracy Sinclare \| Posted: Sat 3:45 PM, Dec 07, 2019 ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - A couple of days of snow and temperatures dropping below average and it felt like winter had finally arrived. Not so fast. Southcentral and Southwest Alaska—from the Alaska Peninsula to Prince William Sound—should expect a series of strong storm systems moving through. These systems will be warm, wet and windy. The first storm is moving through the Kenai Peninsula and over Cook Inlet Saturday night. Gusty winds are expected in the familiar areas such as Turnagain Arm and the Matanuska Valley. Anchorage could see elevated winds as well to about 35 mph. The precipitation with this system might start as a rain/snow mix in some areas but will quickly turn to rain. Anchorage isn’t expecting much rain/snow with this first system. Only a 1/2 inch of precipitation is forecast. Several locations on the Kenai, such as Seward and Whittier could see over 2.5 inches of rain. More than an inch of rain is expected around Kenai. The second system is stronger and tracks a little farther west, starting along the Alaska Peninsula on Sunday night. It will spread through Bristol Bay, the North Gulf Coast, and Kodiak Island. This storm will be warmer so expect to see another round of rain come through. This could bump Seward and Whittier's rain totals to more than 5 inches. Anchorage could see more than 2 inches of rain between the two storms. Winds will pick up along Turnagain Arm, Cordova, Prince William Sound and into Southwest Alaska.
